Planning your Garden or Landscaping

There is a relatively new concept in landscape design called “Xeriscaping”. This is choosing plants that will survive on only the natural water that is available to them. These plants should be grouped together as you plan your landscaping project. By planting well-adapted plants to our climate in the Mohave Valley you eliminate the need for continuous watering.

Drought Tolerant

All plants require water, light, and nutrients to grow. However, some plants need little water or can go for extended periods without watering. These are “drought- tolerant” plants.

Succulents

This group of plants, increasing in popularity, store water in their leaves. The leaves tend to be thick and fleshy, but some genus and species have thicker leaves than others. Succulents tend to thrive in dry climates and don’t like a lot of humidity. While they do need water to survive, they can endure extended periods of drought, relying on the stored water and nutrients in their leaves. If their roots are sitting in water for too long they will start to rot and die.

Cactus

Cacti have adapted to conserve water. Almost all cacti are succulents but unlike succulents, the cactus stems store the water. Most species of cacti have lost true leaves, retaining only spines, which are highly modified leaves. These spines help prevent water loss by reducing airflow close to the cactus and providing some shade.
